THE OLD DAYS WERE A LOT EASIER
WHEN THINGS BROKE DOWN
All you really had to do was get towed in after getting somebody's Attention (no cell phones)  however after sorting out just how, where, and who was going to do the repairs, hammers, wrenches and screwdrivers were applied, and away you went.  Labor rates were about 3 or 4 dollars an hour, hauling was about  4 or 5 dollars a foot , mechanics and yard help were plentiful , slips were everywhere, and even the most serious of repairs seldom came near the financial impact of today's  average breakdown

I took this picture on Long Island in 2006
Anybody care to guess where?

WHY RETAIN A MARINE SURVEYOR?
Owning a boat and having it break down is one thing, but going out and buying into someone else's headaches is an altogether different thing.  Hiring an experienced and qualified surveyor will greatly minimize the potential and sometimes predictable -- failure of equipment , components and systems-- that just needed to be tested and evaluated with the right instruments and in the right way.--

"IT'S A USED BOAT"  -  "THE BOAT CAME THAT WAY"
"ITS ALWAYS BEEN THAT WAY SINCE I BOUGHT IT
I know all the old sayings, these and a hundred more, and although they may be valid talking points between the broker, seller and buyer, they are -- or should be -- All but meaningless to a professional -- FULL TIME -- surveyor.  I can't tell you how many times I have heard that a survey is only a "snapshot in time".  A picture of conditions that existed on the day of the survey -- to a degree that is true -- but only to the degree and level of the diagnostic procedures employed by your surveyor.  If the surveyor shows up with only a hammer, perhaps a moisture meter, a GFCI receptacle tester -- and a pad and pencil, I think it will be a rather blurry, black and white, snapshot.
